Environmental Art at Laanilan Kievari

Show your creative side and sculpt some art with your team in accordance with the given theme – or perhaps not. Art is in the eyes of the beholder!

Our creative excursion takes us to Laanilan Kievari. Laanilan Kievari is only two kilometres from the centre of the Saariselkä resort. Transfer from Saariselkä takes around ten minutes by car. If the group wants to combine the experience with a bit of exercise, the journey can also be done using kick-sleds. In this case, prepare for the trip to take around 30 minutes.

If the group does not have the necessary outdoor clothing, we will dress in warm winter gear at Laanilan Kievari. The winter outfit includes a thermal overall, winter boots, socks, gloves and a hat. After changing clothes, we meet at the Ice Bar of the Laanilan Kievari, where we savour hot (non-alcoholic) drinks as our snow sculpting guide gives us instructions for performing ice sculpting. The guide is present throughout the entire programme and provides assistance whenever necessary.

Each group will be given two hours to transform the block of snow into the desired work of art. The snow block is the same size for each group – approximately 1.5 metres tall and the squared base is around one square metre. Each group has 3 – 5 sculptors, which means that everyone has the chance to sculpt simultaneously.

After the sculpturing time has depleted, the panel of judges choose the best sculpture. The winning team will be awarded small Lappish souvenirs and we will all toast the winners.

Home Sweet Home, Built your own Lappish Home

Building an igloo is a very familiar activity for the Eskimos, but how do you think you or your group will succeed in the same task? Try your skills in Saariselkä at Laanila Kievari. With the help of an experienced guide, your expert group will receive a memorable and unique experience making your very own igloo. You can also stay overnight in the igloo you build.

After changing clothes, we meet at the Ice Bar of the Laanilan Kievari, where we savour hot (non-alcoholic) drinks as our igloo building guide tells us about the construction project and divides the group into building teams. Construction is work that demands quite a bit of accuracy and the activity keeps the participants warm in the cold weather. It takes around four hours to complete the construction of an igloo, and at around the halfway point, it is worth stopping for lunch, which can be for instance a hot soup lunch in the Laanilan Kievari game restaurant.

As the igloos are completed, the guests really have the opportunity to stay overnight in the igloos they have built. If the guests stay overnight in the Laanilan Kievari igloos, the hosts will naturally provide sanitation facilities for the overnight guests for the duration of the stay, morning washing will be provided in the sauna of the restaurant building, and breakfast is served in the Laanilan Kievari restaurant. All these services are included in the accommodation rate.

After the construction stage, for guests staying overnight and daytime visitors, Laanilan Kievari offers participants the chance to warm up and relax in the gentle steam offered by the sauna in the grounds, and in between sauna bathing, guests can take a refreshing dip in the gold river ice pool or relax in the hot tub under the starry skies. After the sauna and a full day’s work, the delicious meals served by the restaurant will definitely be welcome before settling down for the night in the igloos or one of the Saariselkä hotels or cabins. Guests staying overnight in the igloos will be awarded diplomas to mark their achievement.

Gold Digger’s Twilight – evening party at Laanilan Kievari –

Laanilan Kievari has a long and colourful history. Its history includes the establishment being exclusively intended as an inn for tourist to use. Its earlier and more colourful history is part of Lapland’s gold rush history. Lapland’s first real Gold Rush began in 1870 and lasted for around twenty years. The central area for the gold rush was the Laanila area, even though people were trying their luck at searching for gold all over Lapland. After the gold rush in 1901, the privately funded company Aktiebolaget Prospector was founded, that during the beginning of the twentieth century owned over 450 claims – located in Laanila, Hangasoja, Lutto and Tolosjoki, among other sites. The gold company Prospector came and left, but its headquarters remained in place in Laanila and for decades ahead, the site became the Laanilan Kestikievari inn.

Nowadays, the Laanilan Kievari Gold Digger’s Twilight evening party involves bathing in the sauna, savouring a delicious meal fit for a gold digger, and reminiscing over the gold history of the area and modern day gold panning practiced in the district.

The sauna located in the grounds provides a relaxing opportunity to wind down from the day’s activities. In between bathing in the sauna, guests can take a refreshing dip in the gold river ice pool or relax in the hot tub under the starry skies.

A three-course meal is served for dinner.

After dessert, while enjoying some coffee, the gold digger Paavo Holmisto gives a brief account of gold panning in the area – its history and the modern day. Following this, every guest can try what it is like to pan for gold in the basin Paavo has brought along with him. Paavo knows the area very well, as his valid claims run all the way up to the Laanilan Kievari grounds.

Paavo will also show us some jewellery he has made from the gold he has found in the area, that the guests are free to examine and even purchase.

The duration of the evening party including dining is approximately five hours. Book ”Gold Digger’s Twilight – evening party” here
